iPad external monitor in a portrait orientation

I want to mount a TV or other external monitor in a portrait orientation and mirror an iPad to this screen via the lightning to HDMI output adapter. However, when I do this the video is sideways because the monitor doesn’t have any direct control of the video feed.

is there a way to rotate the output over HDMI by 90 degrees so that the portrait video takes up the full portrait-oriented monitor it’s connected to?

The external monitor is in Portrait orientation.

iPadOS external monitor support assumes the monitor is physically oriented in Landscape orientation. There are no settings to alter this behaviour.
