Custom Labels for Contacts

I frequently make custom labels for my contacts because I don’t use the contact list the way that Apple designed it to be used. As an example, at times I put a husband and wife in the same contact and just label their phone numbers appropriately. Those contacts often times have a home number in addition to several mobile numbers. When I try to change the label to put a persons name it accepts it temporarily but when I hit the “done” button, it changes it back to “home” rather than the persons name or the label “mobile” that I needed a custom label for. How can this be prevented? I am using an AppleXR snd am iOS version 16.1.2

The Contact app is not at issue; it is just the display app for the contact databases, which are independent of the app used to display them. The features of the databases determine what features a contact can have, such as custom labels.

Let's verify that your contacts are all iCloud. Open Contacts, tap on Lists in the upper left. Do you see iCloud as the only account, or are there others?

Also, go to Settings/Contacts and see what Default Account is set to. This is the contact database that new contacts will be assigned to.

Hi there OldCanuk,

If you haven't done so yet, restart your iPhone. Although simple, this step can help correct some unexpected issues. It's also a good idea to make sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version, since this can help with overall performance and updates often include fixes: Apple security updates. If an update is available, be sure to create a backup before installing it.

If the issue persists, reach out to Apple Support directly so they can look into this with you further. They can be contacted here: Contact Apple Support or by calling the most applicable phone number from this list: Contact Apple for support and service.

Regards.

I use the standard contact program that came with my iPhone. I have a large number of contacts, like about over 900 in my contact list, and a high percentage of them have custom labels, and ironically, I have custom labels for, a contact that has two phone numbers one of them works fine for a custom label and the other one won’t work, it always defaults to “home.” That is why it’s so perplexing. I am hoping that I have answered your question appropriately. If you still need further information, please go ahead and let me know.

I just reread your note to me and I guess that down my initial response may not have responded to your question.

I believe that my contact list is linked to iCloud. I know that as far as my photos are concerned, my iCloud is full, however, I don’t know what that means for contacts. I also have I guess my contacts are somehow linked to Gmail as well.

with this present response, did I answer your question correctly? Lonnie.

I have the same exact problem, and now that I see what’s going on, my “lists” are from former phones that have been upgraded for the past 15 years, that I hadn’t stopped to maintain. Figuring out how to edit or merge these lists is more problematic. The entry I’m trying to edit is only in the iCloud account, so I would expect that could simplify it, but it doesn’t change the behavior of defaulting to the prior label.

Thank you, since I have not attempted to do a custom label since the last response in this thread, I have not had any further difficulties. After restarting my cell phone, it did seem to clear up the problem because the custom label stayed when I hit “Done,“ and it had not done that before it reverted back to the original label. I have not done anything more with the iCloud, so I don’t really know if there are additional problems that I’m not aware of yet or not.
