I used to be able to gift single songs to my friends and now I can't find the option to do so.
I've read a couple of answers to a similar question,
“How can I gift a song from iTunes to a friend?”
The answers given state that gifting can only be done via laptop or PC not an iDevice.
That may be true now, but in the past, I was able to gift single songs anytime I wanted.

The info in your original post, "The answers given state that gifting can only be done via laptop or PC not an iDevice," is still correct as regards single tracks. From the iPhone you can gift a full album but not a single song.

Apple removed that option on iOS.

Unfortunately, the issue I am looking to solve, purchasing single tracks to gift to friends, does not apply to your suggestion.
What your suggestion applies to, are whole album purchases.
Please feel free to provide additional information pertaining to gifting single tracks.

Try this:
Tap iTunes Store.
Tap a song.
Tap the Share icon (top right of the screen)
A screen will then appear with a number of options, including Gives as a gift.
