Half my music files are unavailable to me...they want a password but my regular Apple username and password don't work. Not sure what's going on here. It says I can change my password, but will happen if I change my password if my password already doesn't work?

It sounds like you may have Screen Time enabled, so your device will be looking for the Screen Time passcode. If you have forgotten that passcode, follow the guidance found here:
If you forgot your Screen Time passcode

If you have Share Across Devices turned on, your new Screen Time passcode will automatically update on those devices after you reset it.
If you still have issues resetting your Screen Time passcode, contact Apple Support."

Thanx. I'm running Ventura. I believe I selected not to have a passcode for Screen Time. I could turn off Screen Time but I'm afraid of the consequences. Could I turn off Screen Time without losing important functionality?

Yes. You would need to know the password to turn it off as well as change it.
