I tend to hide open applications that I switch back to using command tab. However, if I select these applications via control tab, it won't make the application windows visible. Is there a setting that will unhide an open application switched to via command-tab or is there key modifier I can use to unhide the selected application windows? Or do I have to install a third party app such as AltTab to get this functionality?

So before releasing the Command key, pressing the Option key will unhide the selected app. A bit awkward though.
Cmd-tab should unhide a hidden application, but it sounds like you may be minimizing document windows, not hiding the application. There is nothing in macOS that will un-minimize a document window when you switch to an app.
I've tended to always minimize document windows rather than using Hide. I must have started doing that before "Hide" became a standard menu item, whenever that was. I guess I'll have to swap over to "Hide". Thanks.
