Fast forward rarely works in Apple Music

I've been using an iphone 13 for the last year, and iphone 11 for a couple years before that. Usually fast forward will work. Sometimes it would not, typically when I would have bad reception. I always figured it was because my reception was bad and there was not much song downloaded and so Music would not fast forward because it was not loaded yet. But sometimes it would happen with perfect reception.

However, since I moved, my wifi and data reception are a billion times better.

I noticed I cannot fast forward at all today.

The way I normally would fast forward is to simply press and hold the fast forward button.

I updated to the latest software a few days ago and it still does not work.

Why does fast forward not work most of the time?

Edit: I skipped several songs to test it out and it appears to work on some songs, and not others. If I go back to a song that didn't work before, it still will not work.

Hi there Alias7,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. So we can get a little more insight, we'll need some background info. Are you having this trouble directly from the Music app, or are you controlling from the Lock Screen? Does this happen with purchased music, music gotten from another source or both? And do you experience this with downloaded music, streamed music, or both? The way you are performing the fast forward are correct per the Apple Support article: Play music on iPhone

The Next button.
Skip to the next song. Touch and hold to fast-forward through the current song.

Get back to us with this info, and we can go from there.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

This issue is when I use Siri to play music. I always use Siri to "play me ___ by ___", and its 90% of the time from the lock screen.

I don't have any purchased music on the phone - I subscribe to Apple Music. I have a bunch of downloaded songs on the phone from a long time ago. The issue seems randomly applied to subscribed music and music on the phone. I am not sure if Music plays the downloaded song or the Music version of the song (from the cloud). I do remember being frustrated that Siri would play me a non-explicit version of a song even though I already had in my library the explicit version. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hey Alias7,

That's helpful! You mentioned that 90% of the time you play music by asking Siri. If you find music now in Apple Music without using Siri, do you still have the same issue with fast-forwarding the song? Another test is, since you have a bunch of downloaded songs from a long time ago, can you try adding a new song that you've never added before and download it to the iPhone? What happens then? These tests can help us isolate the issue a little more and find specifically what's causing the issue.

We look forward to hearing back!
