search bar on apple mail on MacBook not there

i have never had a search bar on my MacBook . Why ? When i go to filter and do all the things im told to do like dragging the search bar in to the layout and clicking on icon and text it still doesn't appear . When i use customize tool bar the search is there but still doesn't appear on my mail.
