Files disappear in a folder

I have macOS Ventura 13.1 on my iMac. I'm the only owner and the only user for my iMac. No other people live with me and no other people use my iMac at all. Some of my files suddenly disappeared when I wanted to open those files one day. I installed the macOS software updates following the Apple's notifications over the past several years. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks a lot.

Where were the files located?

Do you have iCloud enabled? Or another cloud file syncing service enabled?

You should be able to restore the files from a backup....assuming you were backing up the computer before these files went missing. Otherwise you can try using Spotlight to search for them, just in case they were accidentally moved to another location.
