camera not working in google meet

with the latest update to safari, 16.2, when I use google meet the camera will not turn on. The camera works in photo booth, so it is a settings issue, not hardware. When I go to settings, security& privacy, and camera, there is no entry for safari and I do not know how to add one. Only entry for Zoom and password manager.

When I start a new meet safari does not ask to use camera and microphone. I went to safari, settings for google and allowed pop ups and camera, but it did not make any difference, no camera in meet.

Camera did work in meet until this lastest update to os and safari.

iMac, macOS 10.12

DaveW75,

The only setting inside Safari that controls camera access is through System Settings and Safari settings as have already been mentioned. Control access to the camera on Mac

In Safari, to allow a website to use the camera, choose Safari > Settings, click Websites, then select Camera.

If the website is not appearing there, that means there might be an issue with it requesting access for the camera through Safari.

If you reset the cookies which also resets the requests, then you'll want to reach out to Google directly for more help with their website: Contact Us for Help & Office Location Guidance - Google

Take care.

Google meet is inside the google mail app. çlearing all the cookies for google did not make any difference camera does not work in meet. Previous version of safari used to ask for pemission to use the camera in meet, this one does not. Set the google mail app to allow camera and still no camera. Does work inside Google chrome, so it is some setting inside safari.

Hi DaveW75,

To clarify, is there a specific app for this? If, so using the app may net better results.

If the camera is working in other apps, it likely is a permissions issue, Under Settings > Security & Privacy > Camera is where you'd toggle on what apps are trusted to access the camera. It is expected for Safari not to be there as Apple apps are trusted by default.

If there is a standalone app for Google Meet, you can then adjust its camera permissions there, which would allow us to isolate this further.

Regarding Safari specifically, we'd recommend clearing your cookies on your Mac, since that would affect whether the website remembers you and any settings for that website. Check out how to do that at: Clear cookies in Safari on Mac

Cheers!
