my iCloud contacts just keep duplicating and are now over 30,000 and growing. I’ve tried going on my MacBook and going into contact cards and using the merge option but because the contacts are just rapidly duplicating it just keeps getting locked. HELP😩

The cause how thousands of contact were created in Mac and iPhone is Mac OS contact data base is corrupted and same repeated contacts are reflected in www.icloud.com , iPhone / in Mac address book .
The Mac OS has to be erased and reinstalled Erase and reinstall macOS - Apple Support
Note : possibility if a user creates few duplicates contacts , they can reflect in address book , but not thirty thousand contacts and that are increasing continuously .

Thank you for posting to the Apple Support Communities.
You may need to repeat these steps several times on your Mac until no duplicates exist If you see duplicate contacts after setting up iCloud Contacts:

will keep trying but my MacBook keeps freezing, I guess due to the volume of mergers
the frustrating think is that even when I completely delete a contact it the reappears?
have now deleted all contacts and then will look to start again
