Can't unzip iCloud download

I downloaded a large folder of images from iCloud Photos. The process, conveniently I thought, sent them as a zipped file. Unfortunately the file sent by iCloud can't be opened. I get this

Can anything be done? Sort of defeats the purpose of using iCloud if you can't trust iCloud to allow access to your content.

Any suggestions on how to proceed would be really appreciated?

Thanks.

Thanks very much Michael. I didn’t know what the error information meant so it was a bit frustrating. I was able to do the download on a different system. That produced a very surprising result. The original 730 image folder was nearly twice as large and held something over 1000 files, many of them marked cache, but others that I can’t identify, and in a pretty random order, kind of a mess to sort out. Quite a different experience from downloading from cloud storage services like Backblaze. I guess I expected better.

Thanks again.

Hi Tom Wolsky,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

We'd suggest trying the download inside a new user account. This will let you know if the issue is system-wide or with just your user account and you may be able to get your file unzipped there. Here's how to Add a user or group on Mac.

If you still can't open it on your user account, we'd recommend contacting Apple Support for a deeper dive.

Have a fantastic day!
