How to always open Weather app to a given city?

I have added 5 citys to the weather app list and have location turned off. Let's say I have cities A, B, C, D and E in my list. When I open the weather app I'd always like it to default to display city A. But for some reason it opens to one of the other citys. Even if city A is at the top of the list and was the last one I viewed previously in the app. Any way to set a "default" city for the app? (Just a note that I never noticed this behavior with previous IOS versions. Prior behavior was that it always opened to display the last city I had viewed before closing the app)

iPhone 12, iOS 16

I have the latest update (iOS 16.2) and it still works the same as always (opens to the last city viewed). If I force close the app it will then open to the first item in the list the first time it is opened.

You may try force closing and then restarting the phone and see if that fixes it. Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support

Definite an iOS 16 bug.

I've always entered the weather app from a widget that is set to my home city. I also have a list of cities in the app that I follow.

If I tap the widget for more detailed info it pulls up the weather app with the city in that is in the position after my home city. I would think most people have their home city 1st in the list, so that's why people think it's the 2nd city.

ex 1. given the list of cities in my weather app:

A < widget set to A

B

C

D

Tapping on the widget will open the weather app at city B.

ex 2. given the list

B

C

A < widget set to A

D

Tapping on the widget will open the list at city D.

This is likely an indexing bug.

Work arounds:

  1. If you have allow location access to the weather app, this seems to be a work-around.
  2. Put you "home" city last in the list. e.g

City list:

B

C

D

A < widget set to this.

Tapping the widget will open to city A.

I force closed the weather app and restarted the iPhone but no luck. The weird thing about this weather app bug is that it often opens with the SECOND city in my list but at the bottom of the screen there are 4 dots displayed and the FIRST dot is illuminated (Implying that the first city is being displayed!) My work around is to leave the weather app running at all times so I can quickly see my desired default city of choice. Once the app is closed and restarted it’s anybody’s guess as to which city in the list will be displayed.

Thanks for the suggestion but that had the same problem. The “today” screen widget is set to my desired city A but when I long press it to open the weather app it opens to incorrectly display city B! That gave me the idea to add an Accuweather app widget to the today screen and set it to city A and when I long press it, it opens the Accuweather app correctly to city A. The Apple weather app could use some work in this area.

I just upgraded to 16.2 iPhone 11 today and my weather app is doing the same thing. I have my home city as the first in the list. When I close the app with that city and reopen it the 2nd city opens. If I close it with the whole list visible after having the 1st city open, it opens with the 2nd city instead of the whole list. Same issue with the dots at the bottom of the screen that you’re having.

If I close it with it on the 2nd city when I reopen it the 3rd city opens etc etc. the only one it doesn’t do it with is the last one. If I close it with the last one it reopens in it. If I look at the last one then go to list view and close it reopens in the last city.
