How to auto sync music purchases?

Why won't my purchased music (via my iMac) automatically be available on my iPhone? What's the point of having an "ecosystem" if the components don't automatically connect?

iPhone SE, iOS 16

Go to Settings > Music and turn on Automatic Downloads. This will only work for future purchases.

You can select and download your past purchases too. It just won't happen automatically if/when you enable Automatic Downloads.

Thank you, picas. I thought I responded to this...but here's the thing that doesn't make sense. We purchase music, and just because Apple has rules that users don't know about, we can not sync past purchases? It's pretty jacked up.
