Use ipad as 2nd monitor

I can connect my Nikon d7500 to my TV via HDMI as a video monitor. But I can’t connect it to my ipad with an HDMI adapter. What am I doing wrong? I want to use my ipad in the field as a video monitor.

So far, there is no way to use an iPad as a display for an external HDMI display, but you can use sidecar to use an iPad as a display, or use the app Fast Cast on the App Store to use it as a display for another iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, android device, or a PC.
