Hello, I am Kevin and I have been trying to be helpful in the discussions by answering other people's questions. I only obtained points for the first two discussions I answered and the rest none. Does the person that asks the question have to mark mine as helpful to get points?

Yes OP can mark it as answered, but the moderator here can also recommend your answer as helpful.
Be patient keep helping others out and eventually the points will come.

I understand. I was just wondering because as you level up you have permissions to do more powerful things such as reporting posts and I have seen some posts that were not related to what they were supposed to post at all.

Not everyone comes back to mark an answer and we are not allowed to ask or even hint. It takes a while. Points are not why we're here - helping is.
Simply keep posting quality answers, and the points will come. Over time spent here, you will find that a genuine “Thank you” from someone is far more rewarding than points.
