Hi Activatemac,

It depends on whether the Mac has an Intel processor or an Apple silicon chip.

Intel-based Mac:

When you locked your Mac from Find My, you created a 6-digit unlock PIN. Provide this PIN when prompted on the Mac.

If you don't remember the PIN, it might be available for a short while from Find My. Select your device and look for an Unlock option. If that doesn't appear, contact Apple Support for assistance.

Apple silicon Mac

When you locked your Mac from Find My, that triggered Activation Lock on your Mac. You will need an Internet connection, your administrator password, and your Apple ID password in order to reactivate your Mac and start up normally.

If you don't know your administrator password, unfortunately you will need to erase your Mac. This deletes all data on your Mac. To do this, click Recovery Assistant in the top left corner, then choose Erase Mac.

If you can't get past Activation Lock, contact Apple Support for assistance. Or, start an Activation Lock unlock request.

After you locate your Mac, you can unlock it by entering the passcode that you created when you locked it with Find My.

If you can't remember that passcode, you have three options:

  • Sign in to iCloud.com/find, then select your Mac from the Devices menu. Select Unlock and follow the steps to verify your identity.
  • Unlock your Mac from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple Watch using your device passcode.
  • Take your Mac to an Apple Authorized Service Provider along with your proof of purchase.
