Time Machine

My Apple Time Machine just keeps cleaning but doesn't backup. How do I make it backup?

Stuck on "Preparing backup..." Using a new external drive and Time Machine has been saying "Preparing backup..." for almost 15 minutes now. Is this normal?

It finally stopped. It is now backing up. I had to wipe it clean and restart it all over. Thank you for responding.
