Macbook Air won't update past 11.1.2

"Macbook Air won't update past 11.1.2: I've tried resetting, erasing and reinstalling mac os. I am trying in particular to download iMovie but can't because my OS won't update past 11.1.2 Is there a way to update it or should I get a new computer?"
