Mail behavior

I have multiple gmail accounts, but one won't connect in mail. THe message is: "Trying to log in to this IMAP account failed. Verify the username and password." I don't know where or how to do this. It just suddenly happened. I've been using this mail account for years. I've rebooted the laptop to no avail. Running OS 12.4 on a MacBookAir 20019. What am I doing wronf or better yet, how might I correct this? Thank you.

You did nothing wrong. Email service providers change things all the time. Some are more annoying in that regard than others. The "verify the username and password" messages are decidedly unhelpful.


Please read If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac - Apple Support. The most expedient way to solve that particular problem is described at the end, under "Remove your email account, then add it back."


First remove: Log out of or remove email accounts in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Then add: Add email accounts in Mail on Mac - Apple Support


Be sure to heed the Important note in the first document.
