How do I get my phone to display AM and PM next to the time. I DO NOT want to use 24 hour time, but want to add AM or PM. I know that Steve Jobs disliked this, but it’s a pretty basic functionality. Short of opening the clock app there’s no way to check the actual time?

If you mean on the lock screen, I don't believe that's an option. You can let Apple know that it's something you'd like to see here:
I'm asking this out of genuine curiosity not snarkiness but, under what circumstances do you find yourself looking at your phone in order to determine if it's day or night? I know that, every once in a while, if I take too long a nap, I'm a bit confused about that when I wake up but it usually passes pretty quickly.
