contacts list all-of-a-sudden populated with email addresses

I have an iphone 12pro on ios 16.0.3. Recently while trying to make phone calls, I typed in a contact's first letter, only to find that my contact list does not just show the names of the contacts I have, but is now populated with email addresses. I would like to know how to go back to where only the actual contact names (not email addresses) show up in my contact list. Any help is appreciated!

WineboyNapa,

Thanks for getting back to us. You'd be managing groups of contacts on iCloud.com. This article will explain further: Create and manage groups of contacts on iCloud.com

"When you create a contact, it’s placed in the All Contacts group. To help organize your contacts and make them easier to find, you can create additional groups."

What do you see when you view your contacts synced to iCloud through a computer's browser? Are they all email addresses there too?

Also we'd suggest updating to iOS 16.2 to rule out this being related to an outdated version of iOS. Here's how: Update your iPhone or iPad.

"Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

  1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
  5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do."

Let us know what happens.

Have a fantastic day!

Drew thanks for the reply! I am not sure if anything’s changed recently , but this has happened before. The contact list in question is when I go into phone app, and want to dial a contact. I type in their first name (my contacts are by first name first), and now I get a list of hundreds of email addresses interspersed with actual names. I know somehow the fix has to do with groups, as I have fixed before, but now I cant even find how to get into groups.
