Can I download the .dmg file to be installed on a different computer?

Would like to upgrade my late 2011 MacBook Pro 15" from Lion to El Capitan, then High Sierra, but cannot access Chrome or Safari because I need an updated ios system in order to do so.

If i can download the .dmg file and drop it onto the MacBook can I install it there?
