Imovie saying "Not Enough Disk Space" ?

I clicked update by accident on my iMac and it updated to Catalina OS 10.15.7.

Now Imovie(version 10.1.11) is displaying this message when I try to do anything in a project.

I have 600GB free on my iMac so space is not the problem.

Everything is up to date the App Store too.

This is solved now.

  • First I backed up my iMovie Library(User/Movies/iMovieLibrary)
  • I had to drag iMovie app into the trash. (I deleted it but some say its not needed)
  • Then you go into the App Store
  • On the bottom left click your username
  • Scroll down until you find iMovie
  • It said "Open" for me but beside it there is a hidden button(White circle with three blue dots)
  • Click that and select "Delete App"
  • Then on the top left of the menu bar search "iMovie"
  • Click download and it will tell you "you need to download an older version"
  • Click Yes.
  • Download & Install
  • Open up iMovie
  • Click File - Open Library - iMovie Library
  • The "Not Enough Disk Space"" should be gone then

Hi, lorcan272,

Update your present iMovie app to the highest version that Catalina will run. Use the following procedure instead of the normal update procedure:

To update/redownload iMovie 10, drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the trash. Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar. You will see your purchases displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from there. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash and return it to the Applications folder.

Now see if that solves the "not enough disk space" issue.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for replying. iMovie is updated as far as it can go on Catilina. I tried that method but it just says "open" in the app store. There is no option to download it when the original app is in the thrash.

Edit: I selected the option delete app beside it and I can download it now. Hopefully this works.
