Advanced Data Protection Issue/Bug

With the latest release of iOS and MacOS, I enabled Advanced Data Protection from my Mac without issue and setup a recovery key for the account. 2 Days later I woke to my iphone (latest iOS) telling me that I needed to setup a recovery key. I figured it might be due to different OS, so I went through the procedure on the phone and created another recovery key for the account. It reported that everything was fine and I got an email saying "A New Recovery Key has been activated". But now the phone is still prompting me to create another Recovery key or emergency contact. I went online to the AppleID support page and confirmed there that a recovery key was activated (it does not allow you to see how many or to view them). Why would iOS not recognize the recovery key? I verified that all other iCloud features are working without issue.

Hello COlliff,

You've completed some great steps to resolve the issue that you're having on your iPhone, after enabling Advanced Data Protection for iCloud. To ensure that we're covering all of our bases, lets be sure that everything is set up as shown here, starting with the "Requirements" section, of this article: How to turn on Advanced Data Protection for iCloud

If everything is set up properly, restart your iPhone. Completing this step allows your hardware and software to be refreshed and can often time resolve the issue:

"1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.

The volume button is located on the left side of the device, and the side button is located on the right

2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.

3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

If the issue persists, we suggest that you reach out to Apple directly concerning this issue. Follow this link to connect with them: Get Support

Take care.

I've been wrestling with this same issue for quite some time and have raised it with support. Not only does it happen on my iPhone (which I used to enable ADP) but pops up on other devices signed into my iCloud account. And I can go days or even a week before it happens on another device, be it one of my Macs or one of my iPads. The only "band-aid" is to log out of my iCloud account on the device showing the problem and log back in. But it can happen again. This sort of whack-a-mole problem really needs investigation. As a side effect, which only seems to "infect" IOS and iPadOS devices, another feature I'd enabled on all my Apple devices called "Private Relay" got turned off when I enabled ADP via my iPhone. The feature stays on for MacOS devices. Both of these functions, ADP and Private Relay live under the iCloud umbrella. Seems a fix for all of this is destined to haunt the black hole that is Apple's engineering group.
