Can't add a new Contact in macOS Ventura

I have a 2019 27" iMac, and my contacts database is at least ten years old. I can't add a new contact using Apple macOS Ventura built-in Contacts app. This was a problem in Big Spur, but I never fixed it. I only used a workaround of entering new contacts via my iPad or iPhone.

Additionally (since I couldn't update the previous reply):

This gets more confusing.  Looking at the Contacts app on my Mac, when I went to All Contacts it showed the 5 attempts with the various bits of data, and that was synched to my phone and watch, though all were incomplete.  I then signed into iCloud.com and entered the full record into my Contacts there, but that has not yet synched down to any of my devices.

On my Mac, I disabled the only Account (iCloud CardDav) and then I was able to fully enter the contact company and all of its details.  But that one will not sync anywhere.  So somehow I seem to have two different iCloud versions of things although they are all signed in with the same account (email/password).

Never experienced this until I added a new M1 MacBook to the stable (the old one on BigSur still plays fine, as does my work MacBook on Ventura).
