Disk Utility does not show APFS format

I'm running OS 11.6. After much agonizing over what format (noun) to format (verb) an external SSD I decided to go with APFS. Imagine my surprise that Disk Utility did not have that option.

What gives?

It would seem very odd since the computer is running Big Sur

Bug Sur requires the internal Drive to be in APFS Format to function.

Perhaps the suer has not chosen the Upper Most Drive Name ( Manufacturers Name of the drive ) ?

This document from Apple should provide the specific information to archived this APFS formatting.

Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

The Devil is in the details.

In Disk Utilities >>> View >> View All Attached Drives and choose the Upper Most Drive by Name
