If you check your storage space on your phone, you should also get some suggestions about how you can optimize your free space:

Transferring photos to your computer might help, since photos usually take most of the free space.

But remember, if you are using iCloud Photos, removing photos from your device will also remove them from iCloud and any other device connected to your iCloud account.
