Safari search Dictation stops with the slightest pause

using dictation to enter text in the safari search field, with the slightest pause in speech it beeps and stops listening. You cannot even take a short breath. If you restart dictation it has the same behavior. This makes dictating search text in safari useless.

dictating in any other application works without this issue.

This did not happen with iOS 14 and before. This started with iOS 15. It has continued with iOS 16.

I have an iPhone SE second generation (iphone 12,8). I have turned dictation on and off. I have power cycled the phone. I’ve cleared the safari cache, cookies, history. Nothing seems to help.

others have noted this behavior in this community, but there’s never been an answer on how to fix it.

Thanks for the response. This started happening when I installed iOS 15 when it first became available. Currently iOS 16.1.2 (the latest release) is installed.

I will contact Apple support as you suggest. If you search the various forums here a lot of people have reported the exact same problem.

Thank you

Hi there ragtowne,

If Dictation is not working as expected in Safari only, the first thing we would recommend is to ensure your iPhone is fully updated. This install feature improvements and can resolve unexpected issues like this. These steps from Update your iPhone or iPad show how:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.
5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

If this continues after your iPhone is fully updated, then we would advise contacting Apple Support next. They would be the best equipped to investigate this behavior further. Contact them here: Contact - Official Apple Support

Cheers!
