Error Code -51 when transferring large files over SMB

I am having an issue where large files transferred over Wifi from my Ubuntu server to my Macbook Pro are failing. I can transfer files <500MB without issue. I was getting error code 100060 but I was able to fix this by setting a static local IP. Now I'm getting code -51. The file I'm transferring doesn't matter- any large file will fail, and any small file succeeds. I have 600GB free space and the files I'm trying to transfer are 10-15GB (videos). Ventura 13.0.1. Also of note- I have the same file share configured on a desktop Windows machine and can transfer the files above (and play them back) without any problems.

Hi Ripper,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Since it sounds like this happens with file sharing, we'd recommend starting by looking over your settings. Set up file sharing on Mac - Apple Support and Connect your Mac to shared computers and servers - Apple Support can help to make sure everything looks right.

Then, since it seems that the issue may be with file size, it may be best to try zipping the files before sharing. Below guidance is from Zip and unzip files and folders on Mac - Apple Support.

"On your Mac, do any of the following:

  • Compress a file or folder: Control-click it or tap it using two fingers, then choose Compress from the shortcut menu.
  • If you compress a single item, the compressed file has the name of the original item with the .zip extension. If you compress multiple items at once, the compressed file is called Archive.zip.
  • Unzip (expand) a compressed item: Double-click the .zip file.
  • The unzipped item appears in the same folder as the .zip file. If you want to, you can delete the .zip file.
  • Note: If you can’t open the .zip file, make sure you have enough space on your Mac for the unzipped item. If you received the .zip file from someone else, there might be a problem with the file. Ask them to zip the file again and resend it."

Best of luck.

Thank you for the reply Ripper!

To help isolate the issue, see if this occurs in safe mode. Starting up your Mac in safe mode may help us identify whether issues you are experiencing are caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up:
