iTunes and Ventura, iTunes not allowing me to copy and paste music stored on external hard drive to an external folder; download arrow not working

I'm having a recurring issue with Music/iTunes that may be related to Ventura. I do not subscribe to Apple's streaming service, but I buy songs on the iTunes store and copy over songs from CDs and store them all on an external drive. In Music/Settings/Files the destination is correctly listed in Music Media Folder as my external drive. This enables me to take the playlists I've created in iTunes and copy and paste them to an external folder (which I then use to put together a radio program that I host). I recently bought a new 14" MacBook Pro with the M1 silicone chip with OS Ventura. I began having problems with Music/iTunes right away with being able to download purchased songs, copy and paste any songs (even songs I've had forever on my drive) or drag-and-drop any of them, so we backed-up and then erased the main drive and reloaded all fresh up-to-date apps. But still the problems persisted with Music/iTunes. The program would freeze up when trying to download purchased songs; and it was still not allowing me to copy and paste. I clicked Get Info and noticed that all my songs listed the location of the song as icloud, not my hard drive. But when I clicked on the download arrow to the far right of the songs the app would freeze again. I force quit; and then to reopen the app I'd have to restart the computer. I took it to a Genius Bar and we tried a few things until the preference labeled "Would you like to move and rename the files in your new Media folder to match the “Keep Media folder organized” appeared and we checked YES. Music/iTunes then reorganized the files, and we then we clicked the download arrow in the top right of a playlist, the music downloaded and connected to my external drive. I don't know why this happened because all of this music was already downloaded (we're talking 30,000 songs), but now I could copy and paste the songs. However, one day after coming back from the Genius Bar, the download option is acting glitchy again. I'm getting this error reading: Unknown error -50, that appears to be related to any number of issue, including a corrupted iTunes. Just now, I just tried to redirect my Music/Settings/Files to a new subfolder on my external drive, clicked yes again on "Keep Media folder organized", the files re-organzied again, I was able to download about two songs, and now Music is frozen again with the spinning beach ball. This is a maddening issue because no one I've talked to at Apple appears to have encountered this issue so they can't tell me how to fix it. I'm beginning to suspect the new Ventura is screwing up iTunes in some way. Is anyone else having this problem?

You are running Ventura. The app is called Music. If content that should be stored locally becomes cloudy this usually indicates that your library has been corrupted and silently replaced with a new empty copy. This library will include all of your unhidden purchase history in the cloud, so the damage may not be immediately apparent if the bulk of your library is purchases. Ideally you would have a backup of your Music Library.musiclibrary database in Time Machine or similar such that you could restore the database to a point in time that predates the corruption. Or you can simply import all of your locally stored files to rebuild the library, but that still leaves you with lost ratings, play counts, playlists, date added details, etc.

If you don't have Time Machine set up already, I suggest you buy another external drive and get started. Take a look inside the Music Library.musiclibrary package. There may potentially be a recent .tmp file in there that holds a more complete version of your library. See Empty/corrupt iTunes/Music library after upgrade/crash - Apple Community for some background. In normal operation a single .tmp file flits in and out of existence as the library is updated.

Thanks for the response. I tried something else that seems to be working...so far. I erased and re-formatted my SanDisk 1TB drive where I stored all of my music (after backing it all up of course). The drive was formatted as ExFat and I was advised that OS Ventura and the M1 chip on my 2021 MacBook prefer Mac-specific formats like APFS and Mac OS Journaled. This drive did not offer APFS but it did offer Mac OS Journaled. After re-formatting and reloading all of my music, now the download arrow on my playlists are quickly re-syncing my songs. I hope this keeps working because the other options your post offered sort of terrified me. I'll be back for clarification if I get this problem again. Thank you!

I've not updated to Ventura yet but I've been completely unsuccessful using Monterey, as many have. I'm hoping Ventura will work.

My problem may be a little different. My current iTunes library is on an 5 Tb HD attached to a mini running Mojave. I back it up to another 5Tb drive using SD! It is NOT organized. My iTunes/iTunes Media directory has two key directories, Music and Pure Vinyl. Both are subdivided by artist/album/tune.

The tracks in Music are almost all CD or digital downloads, usually in the m4a format, which is Apple MPEG-4 audio. Most of the downloads are 96kHz.

When I decided Channel D might never update its software to run on the latest computers I converted all my Pure Vinyl tracks to 96kHz m4a files.

The iTunes .itl file properly references everything.

I gave up on Monterrey, so now, what should I try when I upgrade to Ventura? One question is do I have to ORGANIZE my library or can I leave it as is?

As noted, .itl conversion to .musiclibrary should work on Ventura. It has in my testing and as reported by other users. If you're currently running Monterey and cannot convert the library then it is possible (media not required) in Catalina or Big Sur. I have a Mac mini running Catalina and have converted a number of libraries for people remotely. Email the .itl file, or a link to a copy in a cloud drive, and I will convert and return. You can find details in the bio of my profile here.

Thanks. I'm glad Ventura is known to work, but I'm still replacing my Pure Music bookmarks with m4a track files. So far I've completed about 1000 albums and have another 450 to go. At that point I have three options: 1) send my .itl file to you; 2) Upgrade Mojave to Big Sur on my mini; 3) Upgrade Monterey to Ventura on my MBP. Apple just released 13.2, which ought to be safe, and 13.3 may be available by the time I'm ready so I'll probably go that way.
