EXTERNAL SSD CONNECTION ISSUE FOR TIME MACHINE

I've just purchased a SILICON POWER model B75 Pro portable SSD for back-up via Time Machine but on connecting the SSD Time Machine doesn't recognise that the SSD is connected to my new 24" iMac computer. Can someone please suggest how I resolve this?

iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021, 2 ports)

About Backing Up Catalina:

Save the data elsewhere, and then format it to APFS format using Disk Utility in Recovery Mode

Refer to these Links:

Which Drive to Get:

Purchase an external drive 1.5 times the internal storage. Make sure that the original packing reads that it is compatible with the macOS.

So, what to Do:

Use Time Machine Backup - and not a third party app. You would....

  1. Open: Disk Utility***
  2. Erase: the drive
  3. Format: with APFS format

***To Open Disk Utility: Go to: Applications > Utilities

"TheLittles", whoever you are, wherever you are, thank you!

I'm not very computer savvy at the best of times, so it doesn't take much to cause me issues with all things tech! I followed your advice and managed to open the Disk Utility app for the "SP B75 Pro" SSD and true to form it was formatted for Windows, so I deleted/erased the drive and selected to reformat it for "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", whatever that means, since there was no "APFS" format option offered, but it seems to have worked and my new SSD has turned green with the Time Machine logo in the centre and had completed the back-up.

So a big thank you for helping me out!

Cheers,

Roger Briggs
