when I open a Word document there is no top margin. I have gone to Layout/Margins and a 2.54cm upper margin is shown, but when I open a doc the first line is at the top of the page. I have reinstalled the application but the problem persists

What about your header and footer margins? Could you have a header margin of 0 and be typing in the header area? Taping the backwards P to reveal control characters might give you a clue as to what is going on.

when I go to layout/margins, I see that the upper margin is indicated as 2.54cm but there IS NO UPPER MARGIN. When I look a control characters the is a backward P on the top line, right at the top of the page.
By the way I've tried going to Microsoft Support and waded through multiple lists of useless information. Does anyone know how to talk to a real person at Microsoft?

thanks, but that's not the problem. There is no top margin on the screen and also when I print a document.
Silly question, but did you watch all of the video? Are you on View > Print Layout? If you go Layout > Margins > Layout what do have for Header and Footer?
