This is second time in a couple of months that I'm getting a popup screen (see attachment) when I'm on Safari. Is this just a fishing expedition or do I need to be worried that my Mac has been compromised?

It's a scam. A message warning of malware will only be legitimate if you manually started a scanner or uploaded a file to a website.
