Camera orientation won't change to landscape when phone is facing down (or up)

Hi,

Whenever I try to take a photo with my phone facing down (so for example if I want to take a photo of something in my other hand) the camera orientation doesn't switch to landscape, even though my phone is clearly oriented to take a landscape photo. All the photos end up being taken vertically, so I have to go and edit them. While testing, I noticed two things:

  • The same happens if I'm pointing my camera up.
  • The only workaround to make the phone switch to landscape is if I lift my phone to a "regular photo" position, see the 1x switch orientations and then back down.

What I think is happening is that the camera/gyroscope doesn't work when the phone is held up or down.

Is this a known issue? Or is it just my phone?

Thank you.

Hi msordo,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

We understand the the orientation of iPhone is not changing when taking a photo. If you have any magnetic attachments on iPhone, remove them as they may interfere with the sensors. Make sure iPhone has been updated and restart to restart running processes and install performance fixes.

Make sure Orientation Lock is disabled in Control Center and test in different camera modes.

If this continues, contact Apple Support to check into the behavior.
