You most likely have a hardware issue of some sort.
Try booting into Safe Mode which should eliminate possible software issues. You can also Option Boot the laptop by holding down the Shift key immediately after the startup chime. Is the video here Ok, or are there lines/issues here? If there are any video issues here, it confirms a hardware issue of some sort.
