Some fine print......you must have installed iOS 16 on your phone.....before......the message was deleted. The deleted message is stored in a Recently Deleted folder for 30 days. After that, the message is permanently deleted.

If you do not see the Recently Deleted option on your phone, there are no messages that were deleted after iOS 16 was installed.....or.....if messages were deleted after iOS 16 was installed, more than 30 days have passed since the message was originally deleted.
