I have a MacBook Pro 13" from 2017 that started to show display issues, spontaneous ghosting and strange colours. I decided to connect an external monitor (4K) wich is direct connected via HDMI. I can only set the refresh rate to 30Hz. I exchanged the cable for USB-C, still only 30Hz.
The same cables on a windows laptop result in 60Hz refresh. Anyone know what the problem can be?

...and you are having trouble with your displays but did not bother to disclose that you are using a Docking device, sitting right in the middle of the cable going from the Mac to the display.
What make&model docking device(s), exactly?
The monitor is an LG 32UN880 and I tried two different cables, one that came with the monitor and a 40Gbps cable I use for another connection from the monitor to a 4K Dell laptop. Both cables are certified high speed cables. The white cable that came with the mac does not work at all, only for charging the macbook.

cables that shipped with a display are notorious for being "lowest bidder" cables. if they do not work at highest resolutions, it is not surprising.
a working 40G Bytes/sec USB-C cable under 0.8 meters long, connected directly to your Mac should be working PERFECTLY, and should be able to refresh at 60Hz.

I know the cable should work but it is not, hence the post on the forum. I have however accepted that the Macbook is not designed to process heavy workloads so I will be using it for word processing and browsing only. So trying to get it to refresh at 60Hz is not worth the energy. It is an ongoing struggle with this laptop.

MacBook Pro 2017 models do not have a direct HDMI output.
what model year, exactly, or how were you making such a connection?

I use a usb-c to multiport adapter (tried one from Dell and one from startech) both work fine on other laptops and the usb-c connection directly to my LG 4k display.
The docking is optional. If the direct connection between the monitor and the Macbook works via usb-c, I am saved for now. I have tried different profile as well but that would not solve the issue

where did you get the USB cable you are using? shipped in the box with your Macbook Pro?
