Siri doesn’t work across all my devices

Around the launch of ios16, even though I didn’t upgrade, Siri had basically become nonfunctional across all my devices.

and I mean all of them. I have a homepod, two homepod minis, an iPhone and an iPad and Siri can’t do the most basic things across all of them.

Some examples of functions I used to use daily but now do not work:

hey siri, play some music

hey siri, pause music

hey Siri, what’s 10 times 10

siri just cannot manage any of the simple stuff that used to be easy. It’s basically made it impossible to use my devices by voice which is incredibly frustrating.

had anyone else experienced this? Is there a way I can do a reset? I’ve reset all HomePods but it hasn’t done anything. I’ve upgraded my iPhone to ios16 and it hasn’t gone anything (if anything it’s gotten worse with ios16). Can anyone help me with this?

Hi crogers2465,

For help with Siri on your HomePods, ensure the software on the HomePods is updated as well. The steps below found in the article here: Update HomePod - Apple Support

"Update HomePod

Use the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to update the software on your HomePod or HomePod mini.

By default, HomePod and HomePod mini automatically install new software updates, but you can manually check for updates in the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

The Home app on iOS with Software Update highlighted.

  1. Make sure that your device is updated to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS
  2. Open the Home app.
  3. Tap or click the More button , then Home Settings  > Software Update.
  4. If there's a new update, select Update. If there isn't a new update, you can select HomePod to turn on automatic updates and get the latest software automatically when it's available. Software Update also tells you if your HomePod is already up to date, and shows you the installed HomePod software.

A white spinning light appears on the top of HomePod while it's updating. The update might take some time. Make sure that your HomePod stays plugged in while it's updating."

When updated, test the phrasing outlined in the article here: Use Siri to play music and podcasts

If it still isn't producing results as expected, reach out to Apple Support to further assist.

Thanks for the help Less.

Homepods are totally upgraded. It appears most of the garbage performance is surrounding the Music app. A lot of the functionality of Siri has restored somewhat (asking for weather, mathematic equations etc) but Apple Music’s functionality has SEVERELY diminished in the past few weeks.

Firstly, homepod’s ability to play any music is totally broken. Either a command of ‘play X album’ will respond with ‘sorry I can’t find X in your Apple Music library’ (yes it is there), or it just waits 10 seconds and says ‘something went wrong with apple music’ and gives up.

But also, even just interacting with my HomePod via the music app is trash now… skipping forward and back a song is so laggy that it I press ‘skip’ twice too quickly it only skips one time, but THINKS it’s on the song it should have been after 2 skips…. And skipping back fails as well, as it gets confused and lags even more.

Similarly, selecting ‘repeat’ or ‘shuffle’ icons is so laggy that I’ll press one and leave the app and it’ll totally forget I’ve selected it and revert to the other setting. Or INCREDIBLY frustratingly, turning OFF shuffle when I start playing an album will revert BACK to shuffle once the first song is completed and going back and turning off ‘shuffle’ gets reverted ENDLESSLY.

This also happens with my apple airpods and AirPods Max via either my iPhone or MacBook.

Airpods Siri command is almost as bad. It also decides it wants to randomly stop my music for no reason sometimes. Dunno if that’s the same issue.

seriously, what the **** is going on? Its worth mentioning my MacBook with a totally separate Apple ID. The only commonality is they share the same Apple Music subscription via family sharing.

so I’m guessing it’s either my Apple Music, or an Airplay issue.

Is there a chance cancelling and re-subscribing to Apple Music may help with this? Will I lose all my music playlists etc if I do this?
