ios 16.1.1 not allowing text messages alerts

After updating my iPhone 12 to iOS 16.1.1 I no longer get notification alerts for my text messages. The text message comes through and the notification shows on screen, but no tone is heard. I have enabled the correct buttons under notifications and the volume is okay. I can manually sound the tone, so it not that. Anyone else having this problem?

Hi rspdallas,

The first thing to double-check is that your notification settings for Messages are configured properly. Change message notifications on iPhone reviews the available options that should be confirmed:

    • "Turn Allow Notifications and immediate delivery for Time Sensitive Notifications on or off.
    • Set the position, locations, style, and sounds for alerts.
    • Choose when message previews should appear on the Lock Screen, and how they should be grouped.
    • Set how many times to repeat an alert (from Never to 10 Times) below Customize Notifications.

See Change notification settings on iPhone."

Then, confirm you have not scheduled a notification summary as described at View and respond to notifications on iPhone and that you do not have a Focus enabled per Use Focus on your iPhone or iPad. Another element to check is that the Ring/Silence switch has not been changed. How to put your iPhone on vibrate, ring, or silent mode illustrates how to confirm this.

If all of those are correct, working with AppleCare directly via Apple Support may be necessary.

Regards.

Thank you. All the settings were set correctly as you mentioned. Upon further testing I found the alert tone was not working only when the phone was in screen lock. I then tested enabling and disabling certain settings I read about online. In the Do Not Disturb setting I had it disabled except for a schedule I had set up for the phone to enable Do Not Disturb between 12am - 8am. I deleted the schedule. I now receive an alert tone when I receive text messages. The tone sounds even in screen lock. Also sharing notifications is now working. It seems iOS 16.1.1 does not work with the Do Not Disturb settings.
