MacBook Pro mid 2012 RAM upgrade

I have upgraded my MacBook Pro mid 2012 RAM from 4GB to 16GB however it now randomly crashes (3 beeps) - it works fine for a few days then if not used for 24/48hrs when I go to start it up I get the 3 beeps and I have to reinstall the RAM - why does this continue to happen?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

What is the make & model of the memory you installed? Macs are very picky about the memory used so most contributors on these forums will only recommend using memory from Crucial or OWC. Even then, you must use the exact part numbers listed when using the tools on their respective websites to identify the memory compatible with your exact model computer. You cannot just buy memory based on speed as there are a lot of other memory timings which are not listed by Apple which must be compatible as well.

With these laptops, the memory slot nearest the Bottom Case is known to fail frequently due to cracked solder joints. Try removing this stick of memory to see if that is the case. Also some compatibility issues only arise when two sticks of RAM are used (I still would not want to use a single stick of incompatible memory since you never know when an incompatability may end up causing a problem).

FYI, contrary to what @TheLIttles mentions, your Mac is capable of using 16GB of RAM. Apple does not official support 16GB of RAM, but OWC has tested that 16GB (8GB x 2) is compatible. Plus I've installed 16GB (8GB x 2) of RAM in our 2012 laptops without any problems (using the exact part numbers Crucial recommends for a Mac).

The part numbers on the label of the memory in your picture does not come back as being "Mac Compatible". Like I said previously you cannot purchase memory based solely on speed. Did the plastic packaging the memory shipped in have "Mac Compatible" or "For Mac" printed on it? The last time I purchased Mac compatible memory about a year ago, Crucial was still printing this on the plastic packaging. If your memory did not ship in packaging marked "For Mac" or "Mac Compatible", then you are using the wrong memory.

If you notice, none of the numbers on the memory label in your picture match any numbers on any of the 8GB modules:

You can contact Crucial tech support to confirm if the memory pictured is compatible with your laptop.

Or like I said previously, the one memory slot has a very high rate of failure.

Your Mac isn’t made to handle so much RAM. Macs com pre configured to work as one device. So, you’ll have to stay with what is in there.
