Are the iphone backups stored in the icloud drive? If so, I see nothing at all in the drive, so the only way I could know if it is there is to begin a restore which probably too late to find out there is no backup when I have a problem that requires one. It would be reassuring to have it labelled as such somewhere.

There is no option to view the contents of an iCloud Backup. You can view the date and size of the last backup on an iPhone at Settings > [username] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Device Name.
