Disable auto-scroll of browsing columns in Music?

When using the 'Songs' view in Music (version 1.3.0.138) on Ventura 13.0.1, and showing the Column Browser, the first item in each column ('All' in Genres, Artists and Albums) is selected, and scrolling any of the columns, and then stopping the scrolling, will cause the view to jump back to the top.

This renders it nearly impossible to browse through one's music library, and this bug has been present in Music for a while.

Anyone have a work around?

Creating a playlist with all tracks still has this behaviour, albeit the time to snap back to the top of the list seems slower.

Hi, thanks for the response.

I have discovered that the problem is that when importing songs into the library, after the files/folders have been scanned and the tracks are 'in' your library, Music goes through and scans all the songs to gather details regarding playback volume and gapless playback, and every time it completed the processing of a file it restarts/resets the code that positions the scrollable areas to focus on the selection.

In other words, a poor implementation in Music.app.

Hello dboroditsky,

With this being an ongoing concern, let's see what may be causing this. As a start, let's see how things behave in safe mode to see if anything 3rd party may be interfering with the behavior. Here's how to access safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

How to use safe mode

Determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:

Apple silicon

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
  3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
  4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Intel processor

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window.
