On switch on I get the apple and progress bar. I get the green disc and space for password. I type in the password, which is rejected and the computer will not start. My name appears below the green disc and at the foot of the screen appears ‘cancel’ button. How can I avoid this and start up without a password and then change the start up password.

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
