Mac keyboard and mouse losing connection

On my Mac (27") running Mojave my mouse and key board have both started losing their connection. These return after say 30 seconds but it is becoming difficult to work like this - any ideas for a solution? (the batteries have been changed).

This is also happening on a second Mac (21.5") running Catalina.

Have you tried to disconnect any extra USB devices to see if that helps? Also some 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi devices might cause problems with Bluetooth.

...BTW just today I bought a new Apple Bluetooth Magic Mouse to replace the very old battery-powered Apple Bluetooth Magic Mouse where the battery cover has been acting up for a long time. I have a 3rd party USB flash drive which, when used, required moving the old mouse closer to the Mac mini 2018 because otherwise is would intermittently disconnect. I have not yet tested that with the new mouse.

There are no extra USB devices connected to my system, only what have always been there (printer and Time Capsule) . As for the second computer that has no devices attached. As my Macs are pre 2015 I don't think the newer Magic Mouse works with the old software. I'll try new batteries but the system is not telling me they are low and it's a bit odd that after the mouse disconnects the keyboard follows.
