Safari and PDF downloads

Why doesn't safari download PDFs? I click on a link for a PDF and the document just shows up in my browser with no download on my desktop and no further option to download it that I can find. And yes, I do have desktop set as my download location in Safari preferences. I can hit the three dots in the URL field and email the doc to myself, but why should I have to go through that extra step?

Hey there Meltflow,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. To get started, we do want to let you know that it would be expected for Safari to open a PDF document in another browser window. Check out this link here for more details: See a PDF in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

Safari has a built-in PDF reader that automatically displays PDF documents right in the browser window. You don’t have to download and install a separate PDF reader app.

To save the PDF document to your MacBook, click on File > Export as PDF in the Safari menu bar, and you should see a prompt to save the document.

Let us know if that's able to help.

Have a great day!
