Photo Album Screensaver Only Shows Unedited Photos

I've tried to find an answer to this for ages but never seem to find a solution.

I have many albums in Photos that contain cropped and/or color edited photos (for example, a photo taken on may iPhone in color is later edited to black and white). When I view these pictures in Photos, of course they reflect the edits I've applied.

When I select an album in Photos for use as a Screensaver, however, the screensaver playback does not show the edited pictures. It only reflects the original, unedited picture.

I've experienced this issue over the last couple of years, it's carried through on system updates, and I've been unable to find a solution online. I'm currently running Ventura 13.0.1 on a 2020 13" M1 MacBook Pro. I've also experienced this on my old 2013 27" iMac (still running Catalina).

Has anyone else experienced this or is able to confirm they're in the same situation? I'm at a loss on how to proceed. Below are a couple examples of "edited" pictures that should show up the same on the screen saver, but when the screen saver comes on, they show up in full color with the original iPhone default aspect ratio.

Hello CoolyMcDuck,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you want your edited photos to show as a screensaver and not the unedited photos. We are happy to help.

Are you choosing an album that has those edited photos or are you selecting all photos as the screen saver?

We’d like to have you do some isolating troubleshooting steps, so that we can isolate the cause further. Please use the steps here to start your Mac in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Apple silicon

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
  3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
  4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Please use the steps as listed here to test in a new user account: Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

Create a new user or group.

Click the New Account pop-up menu (you may be asked to enter your password), then choose a type of account.

  • Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.
  • Standard: Standard users are set up by an administrator. Standard users can install apps and change their own settings, but can’t add other users or change other users’ settings.
  • Sharing Only: Sharing-only users can access shared files remotely, but can’t log in to the computer or change settings. To give the user permission to access your shared files or screen, you may need to change options in File Sharing, Screen Sharing, or Remote Management settings. See Set up file sharing and Share the screen of another Mac.
• Group: Groups allow multiple users to have the same access privileges. You control a group’s access to your shared folders by setting access permissions in the File Sharing options in Sharing settings.

See Add a user or group.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Take care.

Hello again CoolyMcDuck,

Thanks for the follow-up info. Since this issue persists in safe mode and a test user, we suggest reinstalling the macOS. The steps to do so are found in the Apple Support article: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support

Apple silicon
Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window. Click the gear icon labeled Options, then click Continue.

Reinstall macOS
Reinstalling macOS does not remove data from your Mac. To begin installation, select Reinstall macOS from the utilities window in macOS Recovery, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

If you still experience this trouble, get in touch with Apple Support for further assistance:

We hope this helps you.

Hello green500,

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, and apologies on the delay! Work has me traveling to remote areas and there's limited time to connect online!

To answer your question: Are you choosing an album that has those edited photos or are you selecting all photos as the screen saver?

  • I am choosing an album that has edited photos. I also created a Test Album with only edited photos, and the screen saver will only show the original/unedited versions.

I did as you recommended with starting the computer in safe mode, adding a new profile, and going through the process of testing/troubleshooting in different ways (seeing if existing albums showed edited or unedited photos, creating new Test Albums of only edited photos, etc).

Same issue through it all - the Screen Saver only shows unedited photos.

Something interesting is that the little preview Screen Saver image (see attached image, red square on the right) also shows an unedited photo in color, whereas the red square on the left shows the Photos Album version that is edited.

Thank you again for your help on this mystery! I appreciate your time.

Any other thoughts/ideas?
