Speech to text not working while connected to blue tooth in my Tesla

Speech to text works fine on my iPhone when I am not connected to my Tesla (using my phone as a key to the car). However, once I connect to the car after pressing the speech to text button in the messaging app (or any other app) it appears that the microphone is not receiving any input when I speak.

Additionally, dictating texts via the car into the phone seems to work.

i have tried the following with no luck:

  • turned Bluetooth on and off on my phone
  • restarted my phone
  • unpaired my phone from the car and reset the phone as the car key
  • Just updated to ios16
  • have the latest version of s/w on my tesla

Can someone help?

@Pittance I think I got it. Under Bluetooth settings, specify Device Type as Car Stereo

Hi Eric - ok. I’m going to try again as I’m obviously not being clear about the issue.

When I use my phone on a normal basis, I can use the microphone button at the bottom right of the keypad to voice-type. I.e the phone recognizes my dictation and converts it into text in the messages app (or any other messaging app like WhatsApp or slack)

However, when I am in my car (Tesla) and connected to the car via Bluetooth (phone us the car key), the phone does not convert my dictation into text on any of these apps.

Greetings Pittance,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We would suggest changing the Siri Language you are using in Settings > Siri & Search > Language. After downloading the new language, test to see if Siri is working. You can then switch back to your original/desired language. Should this issue persist, get in touch with Apple Support for additional assistance:

Hello Pittance,

Thanks for clarifying. We did misunderstand that the voice control was not working with the car.

Here's what we can do to isolate this. If you disconnect the phone from the car, and the phone works as designed, then the issue is not with the iPhone or the iOS.

Since this only occurs while the phone is paired to the car, something with the way the phone works while paired to the car, or is blocking it. Your choices are to contact Tesla about this issue, or disconnect the phone from the car and use it where it functions as designed.

Thanks.

Hello Pittance,

Thanks for that clarification.

Actually, it seems like Tesla only plays audio files, but we can't be sure, as we don't make it.

"Model Y (see Pairing a Bluetooth Phone), you can play audio files stored on it. Choose Media Player's Phone source, touch the name of your Bluetooth-connected device, then touch CONNECT."

You would need to contact Tesla for help with this since it's not using CarPlay, and all we can see is it should and only plays audio files currently.
