Safari Google Search: back button doesn’t return to previous position

Back button in Safari doesn't go back to the same position on previous page when doing a Google search. So each time, the user has to re-scroll through results from the top.

This is new since iOS 16 updates.

On top of the increasingly poor search results from Google with unrelated images hogging the top of the screen, having to re-scroll is tiresome.

Hey ecbush,

Does this happen when using other search engines such as Yahoo, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and others? This information helps determine if issue is Safari wide or just specific to Google's search engine. To change the Safari search engine on your iPhone, follow the steps below.

  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Safari
  • Tap Search Engine
  • Select a different a different search engine.

If doesn't happen with other search engines, the issue is related to the Google search engine. For additional assistance, you'd want to reach out to Google Support: Google Help. They are the experts that should be able to help.

Take care.

We appreciate you giving that a try, ecbush,

Do you have any extensions installed in Safari? You can go to Settings > Safari > Extensions to check.

Also, the troubleshooting steps outlined here explains how to clear history in Safari and remove any VPN software; we'd suggest giving that a try as well: If Safari isn't loading websites or quits on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Connect to a different network
Try to load a website, like www.apple.com, using cellular data. If you don't have cellular data, connect to a different Wi-Fi network and then load the website.
If you're using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), check your VPN settings. If you have a VPN turned on, some apps or websites might block content from loading.

Clear website data
You can clear website data occasionally to improve Safari performance.
1. Go to Settings > Safari.
2. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
3.Tap Clear History and Data to confirm.

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
