You have to remember, where you have imported the photos from and tell photos where to find them using the command "File > Reconnect ..."

As you probably know, the Photos.app has two ways to import photos, as referenced files or as managed files. This is controlled by the Photos > Settings > General > Importing.

See: Change where your files are stored in Photos on Mac - Apple Support (IN)

If the tickbox “Copy items to the Photos library” is not selected, Photos will not copy the photos into the Photos Library package and manage them there. They will be left in the original location and photos is referencing them. To find the original you have to connect the device, where you imported the photos from, insert the card from the camera in the card reader slot, or connect the drive, where you imported the photos from. Hopefully, you did not erase the photos from the device after importing them.

If you have not imported the photos as referenced images and Photos still cannot find them, your Photos Library may have become damaged. This can happen, for several reasons:

Restore from Time Machine

  • If Photos crashed unexpectedly, it may have left the library in an inconsistent state. In that case it might help to repair the library.
