Using iMac as display for PC Laptop

I want to use an old iMac as a display for a Lenovo laptop. The iMac is late 2009 and running El Capitan, which I believe makes it compatible. I've tried using an Amazon Basics Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable to connect to the laptop, but I can't get the iMac to go into display mode. Am I missing something?

iMac, OS X 10.11

Uh, no, sorry, Sam Lyons, but apart from Target Display Mode, which was only supported for some years and only on certain varieties of Macs/iMac it's just not really possible...the last Macs to support that were from late 2011..... and it was only Mac to Mac, nothing else.... really, it'd be more practical and easier to get an HDMI TV/ Monitor for your Lenovo laptop.... If you absolutely HAD to make it work, then "Duet Display" might be your answer, but that costs money, way more than an Amazon Basics Mini DisplayPort to hdmi cable.... your last option might be to cannabilize your late 2009 imac, but that's all I'm going to say about that

I understand. People are spending a lot of money on unusable cables and adapters based on misinformation posted on other web sites rather than checking Apple tech documents:

The very limited conditions for TDM support are laid out here: Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

If you wasted money because of bad advice on a non-Apple web site, you have a legitimate complaint with that web site.

There is probably more spurious information on the internet about Target Display Mode than there is about the Loch Ness monster and a flat Earth. TDM has been incorrectly attributed as doing everything from supporting any video device ever created to parting the Red Sea!
